51. Full Time Travel Doesn't Fix Your Problems

What happens when a family trades a newly purchased house for a life of full-time global exploration?

Astrid D’Vingy and Clint Bush to discuss their family's four-year nomadic journey (2018–2022) through Southeast Asia, Europe, and Mexico, and their recent transition back to stationary life in Brooklyn, New York. Listen at www.wanderworldschool.com.

Starting with Eclectic Unschooling

While traveling with their kids, now aged 15 and 12, Astrid and Clint embraced an "eclectic unschooling" framework. They prioritized experiential learning—like swimming with whale sharks or visiting museums—complemented by independent reading and math.

One of the couple's biggest insights was managing the "roller coaster of intense socialization and social famine" inherent to worldschooling hubs. They found grounding by carrying a cloth world map to hang in every temporary home.

Exploring the beached of Spain and Portugal were an absolute family favorite!

Astrid also spoke candidly about the emotional toll of re-entry:

"Coming back hit me really hard; I got pretty depressed for a few years. You grow differently when traveling full-time, and settling down can feel like regressing."

Balancing the family's needs along the way...

Financially, the family funded their travels by renting out their Seattle home and working remote tech and digital jobs. During a slow-travel stay in Lisbon, Portugal, they spent approximately $3,000 a month on rent and $2,000 on food, utilizing Bolt for affordable transportation and budgeting via Notion and Google Sheets.
